1914. Alsace is German since 1871.
A farm near the border, on the Alsatian side of the Vosges. Luise and her father hire Elsa to help them with their farm. Elsa is French, an atheist and a hard worker. Everything seems to separate them but Elsa is attracted by Luise. One evening, in play, Elsa ventures a kiss. The next day Luise's father dies suddenly and the war is declared. Elsa decides to stay with Luise to help her run the farm. A few days later a young German deserter, Hermann, comes to hide in their house. While the relationship between Elsa and Luise takes a romantic turn and a fox is lurking around the henhouse, Hermann starts playing a dangerous game and tensions are rising.
